Biography
King Henry VIII separated the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534. King Henry did this by using the act of supremacy to show himself as the head of the Church of England. King Henry did this because he wanted to divorce his wife, and asked the pope to do so. The pope was against it and so was the Catholicism religion, so King Henry founded a new Christian church that was neither Catholic nor Protestant, but a hybrid called Anglican Church or in other words the Church of England. This became official in 1536. The Reformation of the Catholic Church had begun. Monasteries were dissolved, sacraments altered, and Mass spoken in English.
King Henry VIII of England is the third child, second son of Henry VIII and Elizabeth of York. Henry VIII was born on the 28th of June 1491 at Greenwich Palace. Henry had three siblings, Arthur Tudor Prince of Wales, Margret Tudor and Mary Rose Tudor, Queen of France. His elder brother, Arthur, predeceased their father and died in April 1502, which consequently made Henry the heir to the throne at the not quite age of 11. Henry was not preparing to be a king but rather a priest. |
It is believed that Henry's interest in theological questions was due to the work of fact of his earlier education, since his father destined him for the for the Church. But a child of eleven can hardly
have formed lifelong intellectual tastes, and it is certain that secular titles, such as those of Earl Marshal and Viceroy of Ireland, were heaped upon him when he was five. It was also believed that there was no question as to the boy's great abilities at such a young age. Growing up Henry received the top of Europe's tutors and he had good education. This shows that his background was wealthy (or even middle class). He was fluent in Latin, French and English, and could also speak little of Spanish and Ancient Greek King Henry VIII had six wives, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymor, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, two of which were beheaded, two who were divorced, one died and one of the wives outlived King Henry VIII. Two of his wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were beheaded because of their said to be unfaithfulness (Anne was faithful, but Henry grew bored her, then framing her of unfaithfulness, then beheading her) to King Henry. Catherine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves were divorced because them being unable to give Henry a son (Catherine) and the other (Anne) because he felt no need of her. Jane Seymor grew I'll and died, while Catherine Parr outlived King Henry himself. King Henry had all together four children, Queen Mary I "Bloody Mary", Queen Elizabeth I "The Virgin Queen", King Edward VI "The Boy King" and Henry Fitzroy Duke of Richmond. |
